LibreTexts Announces New Partnership with Antecedent Writing

The LibreTexts team is delighted to announce an exciting new partnership with Antecedent Writing Analytics. 

Developed by a small team lead by Dr. Raymond Oenbring, Assistant Professor of English & Linguistics at the University of the Bahamas, Antecedent Writing Analytics is a faculty-led open-source project designed to counter the challenges to academic integrity provided by AI writing tools that allow students to shortcut the writing and learning process. While AI writing tools can be helpful in the business environment, they are proving to be extremely problematic in education. Built around the open source browser-based Collabora Online word processor, Antecedent provides instructors with rich analytics about students’ writing processes as well as the ability to comment on and guide student writing. Antecedent addresses the challenges associated with student’s inappropriate uses of generative AI by a novel approach to evaluating written works, focusing on visualizing students’ effort and writing process rather than solely analyzing textual content. By mapping out the various stages of writing, including revisions, edits, and the overall progression of the text, this system offers a unique insight into the effort behind the written work. Rather than searching for the fingerprints of AI writing as is done by 'AI detectors,' Antecedent provides instructors with robust analytics about student effort and engagement in the production of texts. More than just supporting academic integrity, Antecedent provides instructors and researchers rich insights about student writing and learning. Their focus on process over product, encouraging students’ academic growth and effort rather than merely punitively grading errors, honors a longstanding principle in academic instruction. 

Our partnership with Dr. Oenbring and his team aims to bring Antecedent's unique AI technology to as many institutions as possible, and we are actively working to fully integrate Antecedent with LibreTexts' existing ADAPT homework system.
